How It All Started
The journey of BIRDY is rooted in the vision of Don Bosco (1815–1888), an Italian educator, innovator, and social reformer who devoted his life to the upliftment of poor and marginalized youth. At a time when many children were left without guidance or opportunity, he pioneered a new approach to education one that combined academic learning, practical skill training, and personal mentorship.
Don Bosco believed that every young person, regardless of background, deserved the chance to grow in a safe, supportive, and value-driven environment. His approach nurtured not just knowledge, but also responsibility, resilience, and social commitment.
From those early beginnings in Turin, Italy, his work expanded into a global movement present today in 134 countries, reaching millions of children and youth through schools, vocational training centres, and youth development programs.
